1Key Takeaways
A sample ats resume is a plain, single-column document with standard headings, real text, and bullets that echo the job listing.
The BLS reports 6.3 million job openings (August 2026), up from 6.2 million a year earlier.
There were 4.8 million hires (August 2026), so a resume that parses cleanly has real places to land.
Tables, text boxes, and images are the usual reasons a parser drops your content before a person sees it.
2What a sample ats resume actually looks like
An ATS resume looks plain on purpose. It is one column, set in a standard font, with the headings the software already expects: Summary, Experience, Education, and Skills. Nothing sits inside a table, a text box, or an image.
I wrote this page because most examples online are screenshots of designed templates, and a screenshot tells you nothing about how a parser reads the file. Below I show the actual text, in order, with a note on why each part is there. Data as of August 2026.
The goal is narrow. A parser should pull your name, titles, employers, dates, and skills into the right fields, and a human should still want to keep reading afterward. Parsing first, polish second is the order that works.

3Why clean parsing matters in this market
How we got this data
Seasonally adjusted US totals from the BLS Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey: openings, hires, quits, and layoffs, referenced to August 2026.
- Levels pulled from the BLS public API (series JTS100000000000000JOL, JTS100000000000000HIL, JTS100000000000000QUL, JTS100000000000000LDL; seasonally adjusted, total nonfarm), reported in millions.
Data as of August 2026. Dataset last updated 2026-10-18.
The BLS Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey reported 6.3 million job openings (August 2026), with job openings up from 6.2 million a year earlier. Employers made 4.8 million hires (August 2026) in the same month. Plenty of roles are open, and plenty are being filled.
People are moving in both directions. The survey counted 2.9 million quits (August 2026) and 1.6 million layoffs and discharges (August 2026). Both groups end up in the same applicant pools, so a resume that fails to parse is a quiet way to lose a real opening.
Openings are a larger number than hires in the same month, so many applications will not become a hire no matter how good the resume is. That is why I treat formatting as the part you fully control. Everything else, like timing and competition, you only influence.
4The sample ATS resume, top to bottom
Here is the structure, in the order a parser reads it. I used a made-up customer success manager so the examples are concrete. I left out invented results on purpose, and you should add your own real numbers where you have them.
Every line below is plain text you could paste into Notepad and still understand. If your resume loses meaning when you do that, a parser will lose it too.
- Header: Name on the first line, then city and state, phone, email, and a LinkedIn URL as plain text in the body of the page. Many parsers skip the document header area, so contact details placed there can vanish.
- Summary: Two lines that name your target title and strongest skills. Example: Customer success manager with experience in onboarding, renewals, and Salesforce reporting.
- Experience: Title, company, city, and dates on readable lines, newest role first. Example: Senior Customer Success Manager, Northwind Software, Austin, TX, Jan 2022 to Present.
- Education: Degree, school, and graduation year. Example: B.A. Business Administration, University of Texas.
- Skills: One plain line of exact terms such as Salesforce, Gainsight, renewals forecasting, and SQL.
- Certifications: The full name spelled out, then the abbreviation in parentheses, so both forms are searchable.
Check a real listing against this layout
Once your format is clean, Should I Apply scores a listing against your resume to show how well you fit.
5ATS resume format example: what parses and what breaks
Most parsing failures come from layout, not content. Two columns get read straight across, so a sidebar of skills can end up spliced into the middle of a job description. Text boxes and tables can be skipped entirely.
Creative headings cause a quieter problem. A section called Career Journey may not map to Experience, and then your work history lands in no field at all. Stick to the boring label and put the personality in your bullets.
6Notes on the bullet lines
Bullets are where a sample ats resume earns interviews. The parser reads them for keywords, and the recruiter reads them for proof. A line that does both is short, starts with a verb, names a tool, and states an outcome.
Here is the same job described three ways. Notice that the weak version is not wrong, it is just empty. The best version gives a human something to ask about in the interview.
- Weak: Responsible for managing customer accounts.
- Better: Managed a book of mid-market accounts and ran quarterly business reviews in Salesforce.
- Best: Ran quarterly business reviews for mid-market accounts, flagged churn risk in Salesforce reports, and handed expansion leads to sales.
- Rule of thumb: Start with a verb, name the tool, and state what changed because of your work.

7Keywords: match the listing, not a generic list
Checklist4 items
Keyword pass before you apply
Job title wording
Mirror the listing's title in your summary if it fits your real experience.
Tools and software
Name each tool exactly as the listing spells it.
Acronyms
Write the full term and the abbreviation once each.
Keyword blocks
Skip hidden text and pasted listing copy.
Keywords should come from the job listing in front of you, not from a master list of buzzwords. If the listing says renewals forecasting and your resume says account planning, you may be describing the same work in words the filter never looks for. Use the listing's phrasing wherever it is honestly true.
Place each important term twice: once in your Skills line and once inside a bullet that shows you used it. A resume scanner can show which listing terms your file is missing before you send it. If you want to compare scanners first, I wrote up the options in free ATS checkers compared.
Do not paste the whole listing into white text at the bottom of the page. Parsers read it, recruiters spot it, and it is the fastest way to look careless. Honest matching beats stuffing every time.
8Length, file type, and work authorization lines
Length is a judgment call that depends on your years of experience. Early-career candidates usually fit on one page, and longer histories can justify two. Check your own page count against the resume length tool before you start cutting good material.
For file type, send what the application asks for. When it is open, a Word file or a text-based PDF both parse reliably. Open your PDF and try to select a line of text, and if you cannot, it is an image and a parser will see nothing.
Work authorization deserves one plain line, placed near the top or in your summary. If you will need sponsorship, my explainer on what the H-1B visa is covers the basics. If a form asks for your A-Number, what an A-number is explains it, and it does not belong on the resume itself.
Confirm what a parser can read
The Resume Scanner shows which fields a parser can and can't read from your file, so you can check yours before you send it.
9Before you send it
A clean resume is necessary, and it is not sufficient. The same file will score well against one listing and poorly against another, because the requirements differ. That is why I check the listing before I spend an evening tailoring anything. If a clean parse still doesn't bring replies, why an ATS score doesn't tell you much is worth a read. The matching ATS resume template and how ATS resume scanning works fill in the rest.
The order I follow is simple. Read the listing, decide whether the match is real using Should I Apply, then adjust the Skills line and two or three bullets to the listing's wording. If a role is a poor match, no formatting fix will rescue it, and the time is better spent elsewhere.
You can keep your tailored versions and scores in one place with a free ShouldApply account. Even without one, run the plain-text test, the keyword pass, and the file check on every application. They take a few minutes and remove the most common reasons a resume never gets read.

Frequently Asked Questions
It looks like a simple one-column document with standard headings such as Summary, Experience, Education, and Skills. The text is real, selectable text in a common font, and nothing important sits in tables, text boxes, or images. The sections above show every part in order.
Follow the application's instructions first. When the choice is open, a Word file or a text-based PDF both parse well. A PDF made from a scanned image does not, so test it by selecting a line of text.
You do not need a full rewrite. Adjust the Skills line and a few bullets to match the listing's wording, and keep the structure the same. A resume scanner shows which listing terms are missing so you edit only what matters.
The BLS JOLTS release reported 6.3 million job openings (August 2026), up from 6.2 million a year earlier. Hires were 4.8 million (August 2026) in the same month. These are national totals, so check your own field and location before drawing conclusions.
Use one plain line near the top or in your summary. If sponsorship is involved, see what the H-1B visa is for background. Keep identification numbers like an A-Number off the resume, and read what an A-number is if a form asks for one.
