How the ATS resume scan works

Before a recruiter ever sees your resume, an Applicant Tracking System parses it into a structured database record: name, contact info, work history, skills, education. Around nine in ten large employers filter candidates this way. When the parser hits a table, a two-column layout, a skills chart rendered as an image, or contact details tucked into a document header, it either scrambles the content or drops it entirely. You get filtered out on formatting, not qualifications.

This scanner runs five checks on your resume text, entirely in your browser. First, formatting: it looks for the tab patterns and aligned gaps that betray tables and columns, repeated lines that indicate running headers, page-number artifacts, and image placeholders. Second, keyword density: it surfaces your most frequent terms so you can confirm they match the language of the jobs you want, and flags both low variety and keyword stuffing. Third, length: it benchmarks your word count against what hiring managers expect at your experience level, from a tight single page for entry-level candidates to two full pages for senior roles. Fourth, section completeness: it verifies the five sections every parser maps content by, using the conventional heading names ATS software expects. Fifth, file format: if you tried to upload a PDF, .docx, or .pages file, it warns you about the parsing risks each format carries.

Each issue found deducts from a starting score of 100, weighted by how likely it is to get your resume misread. A score of 85 or higher means you are in good shape. Below that, work through the fixes in priority order, rescan, and watch the score climb. When the structure is clean, the next step is content: matching your bullets to specific job descriptions, which is exactly what ShouldApply does with a full fit score against real postings.

Common questions

What is an ATS and why does formatting matter?

An ATS (Applicant Tracking System) is the software most companies use to collect and filter resumes before a human reads them. Roughly 90% of large employers use one. If the parser cannot read your resume because of tables, columns, images, or content hidden in headers, your qualifications never make it into the database, and you get rejected without anyone seeing your experience.

Is this ATS resume scanner really free?

Yes. The scanner runs entirely in your browser, requires no signup, and your resume text is never uploaded or stored. Paste, scan, fix, repeat as many times as you want.

What ATS compatibility score should I aim for?

Aim for 85 or higher. A score in the 70s usually means one or two structural problems worth fixing before you apply. Below 60 means the resume likely fails to parse cleanly and needs a rebuild in a single-column layout with standard section headings.

Does keyword density really affect my ranking?

Modern ATS platforms rank candidates by how well resume content matches the job description, so the right keywords matter. But stuffing the same term over and over backfires. The goal is coverage, not repetition: mention each relevant skill naturally two to four times in context.
