1Key Takeaways
- 1Use one plain ats resume template: a single column with standard headings and real text parses where two-column and graphic designs fail.
- 2Openings are plentiful: the BLS counted 6.3 million job openings (August 2026), so the fight is over whose resume gets read, not over whether jobs exist.
- 3Hiring is steady: employers made 4.8 million hires (August 2026), and each one began with an application that software or a person had to read.
- 4Fix the template once: layout is the part you control, so set it, test it, and spend your per-job effort on wording.
2The ATS Resume Template That Parses Cleanly
Most resume templates fail for a boring reason. The file looks fine to a person and scrambles when software reads it. I wrote this post so you can copy a free ats resume template structure in a few minutes and understand why each choice is there. The short version is one column, standard headings, real text, and a plain file.
Data as of August 2026. The BLS Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey shows 6.3 million job openings (August 2026), with job openings up from 6.2 million a year earlier. Openings are not scarce, so the contest for each one comes down to whose resume gets read. A resume that parses badly never gets that far.
Parsing is the step where an applicant tracking system pulls your name, job titles, dates, and skills out of the file and into fields. If it misreads a date or drops a section, the recruiter searches a profile that is missing part of your history. The template is the part you control, and you only have to get it right once.

3Why the Parse Step Decides Your Odds
The same BLS release shows how much volume moves through hiring. Employers made 4.8 million hires (August 2026) against those 6.3 million openings. Each of those hires started with an application that someone, or some system, had to read.
People are also moving in both directions. The survey counted 2.9 million quits (August 2026), which is workers leaving on their own terms, and 1.6 million layoffs and discharges (August 2026), which is workers who did not choose to start a search. Both groups end up sending resumes into the same intake systems.
I read those numbers as a reason to fix the mechanical part first. Your bullet points change from job to job, but your layout should not. Set it once, then put your effort into the wording that each listing asks for.
A parse failure is also invisible to you. Nobody emails to say your skills section came through as a block of garbled text. You only notice weeks later, when a role you matched on paper goes silent.
4Free ATS Resume Template, Line by Line
Here is the structure I recommend, top to bottom. Copy it into a blank Word or Google Docs file and keep every element as ordinary text. Nothing in it needs a table, a text box, or an image.
Use the same date format everywhere, such as March 2024 to Present. Parsers read dates to work out how long you held each role, and a mix of 03/24 in one place and Mar. 2024 in another invites misreads. Pick one style and keep it.
Keep the section names conventional: Summary, Experience, Skills, Education, Certifications. A heading called My Journey or What I Bring is invisible to a parser looking for Experience. Boring headings get found.
Write bullets that start with a verb and carry one result each. Short lines parse cleanly and also read faster for the human who opens the file after the system has done its sorting. If a bullet needs three clauses, split it into two.
- Header: your name on the first line, then city and state, phone, email, and one profile link, all as plain text in the body of the page.
- Summary: two lines naming your target job title and your strongest skill area.
- Experience: job title, company, city, and dates on one line, followed by short bullets that start with a verb.
- Skills: one plain comma-separated list that uses the exact tool and skill names the posting uses.
- Education: degree, school, and graduation year on a single line.
- Certifications: certification name, issuer, and year, or leave the section out if you have none.
Match the template to a listing
Once the layout is clean, Should I Apply scores a listing against your resume to show how well you fit the role.
5Best ATS Resume Templates Compared
People searching for the best ats resume templates usually expect a gallery of designs. The best ats resume template is the least designed one: a single column that reads top to bottom in the same order a person would read it. Everything else on the list below trades parsing safety for looks.
Two-column layouts are the most common mistake I see. A parser often reads straight across both columns, so your skills list lands in the middle of a job description. If you want a visual touch, use bold text and white space, which survive every parser I know of.
Table-based layouts fail for a related reason. Cells can be read in an order you never intended, and a date in one cell can detach from the job title in the next. A plain line of text has no such problem. If you're weighing a template against a resume app, are resume builders worth it is the related read.
I keep a separate comparison of the scanners themselves in free ATS checkers compared. Run your chosen template through at least two of them, because they do not all flag the same problems.
Template types and how they parse
| Item | Reading order | Parse risk |
|---|---|---|
| Single column, plain text | Top to bottom, as written | Lowest |
| Two columns | Often read straight across | High |
| Table layout | Cell order can scramble | High |
| Icons and skill bars | Images carry no text | Medium to high |
| Contact info in page header | Header is often skipped | Medium |
6Formatting Rules That Keep Your Text Intact
File type matters more than people expect. A .docx file, or a PDF exported from a word processor, holds real text that a parser can read. A PDF made from a scan or a design tool can be a flat picture, and a picture has no text to extract.
Pick a standard font such as Arial, Calibri, Georgia, or Times New Roman at a readable size. Decorative fonts can swap characters when text is pulled out of the file, and a swapped character in your email address means the recruiter cannot reach you. Contact details are the one place where a parse error can cost you the whole application.
Length is the other formatting question people ask me. Fit your content to a clean layout rather than shrinking the font until it squeezes onto a page. If you are unsure where you land, the resume length tool gives you a read before you start cutting.
Finally, name the file something a human will not mind seeing, such as FirstName-LastName-Resume. Recruiters download dozens of files, and a name like final_v7_new gets lost in a folder.

7Mistakes That Break Parsing
Almost every failure I see comes from decoration. Each ornament is something a person enjoys and a parser cannot interpret. Removing them costs you very little on the page and saves the whole parse.
Hyperlinks need care too. Write the full URL for your portfolio or profile as visible text, because a link hidden behind a word disappears when the file is flattened to plain text. Visible beats clever.
Job titles are the last trap. If your employer called you a Customer Happiness Ninja, write the title a recruiter would search for, and put the internal one in parentheses. The system matches on the searchable title, so give it one.
- Text boxes: content inside a text box is often skipped or read out of order.
- Header and footer contact info: many systems ignore the document header, so your phone number and email can vanish.
- Icons instead of words: a phone icon beside a number can read as a stray character and break the field.
- Skill bars and ratings: a bar means nothing to a parser and hides the skill name inside an image.
- Unusual bullet symbols: exotic symbols can turn into question marks, so stick with a simple round bullet.
8Test Your Template Before You Send It
A template is only proven when you see what a parser sees. Open your file, select all, and paste it into a plain text editor. If the order is wrong or characters are missing, the same thing is happening inside the ATS.
A scanner automates that check and flags the fields it could not read. The resume scanner is built for that step. Fix what it flags, export again, and test again until the text comes out clean. For what the software is actually doing with the file, see how ATS resume scanning works.
Save two versions once the template passes. Keep a master with every role you have held, and make a tailored copy for each application. The master never gets sent. The tailored copy keeps the same layout and swaps in the wording from the listing.
A repeatable test routine
- 1Step 1Paste into plain text
Check that the order and characters survive.
- 2Step 2Run a scanner
Look for fields it could not read.
- 3Step 3Fix and export again
Remove anything flagged, then save a fresh file.
- 4Step 4Save master and tailored copies
Send only the tailored copy.
Trim to the role's length
The Resume Length Checker shows whether your resume runs longer than the role calls for, so you can cut before you send.
9Use the Template on Roles Worth Your Time
A clean template removes the mechanical risk, but it does not tell you whether a role fits. Sending a perfectly parsed resume to a listing you miss on requirements still wastes an application. I built Should I Apply to score a listing against your resume first.
Timing is a separate lever. My notes on the best time to apply for jobs cover when a fresh posting is worth jumping on. If you need sponsorship, the list of best companies for H1B sponsorship in 2026 narrows the field before you touch any formatting.
With 6.3 million job openings and 1.6 million layoffs and discharges in the same month, plenty of people are competing for the good ones. Spend your applications where your resume already matches. You can create a free account to save your resume and score listings against it.

Yes. The structure in this post is free to copy: header, two-line summary, experience, skills, education, and certifications, all as plain text in one column. Paste it into Word or Google Docs and fill in your details. Then test it with the resume scanner.
The best ATS resume template is a single-column document with standard headings and no tables, text boxes, or images. It reads top to bottom, which is the order a parser expects. Design touches should be limited to bold text and spacing.
Either works if the file holds real text. A .docx file is the safest default, and a PDF exported from a word processor is also fine. Avoid PDFs made from scans or design tools, since those can flatten to a picture.
No. Keep one layout and change the wording for each listing, especially the skills list and the summary. The template is the part you set once. A free ATS checker can confirm the tailored copy still parses.
I would not. Many parsers read straight across both columns and mix your skills into your job history. If you want a polished look, use a single column with bold headings and clean spacing.
