"New Card Is Being Produced": What This USCIS Status Means

"New Card Is Being Produced" means USCIS approved your case and is printing your green card or EAD. It usually mails within a few weeks. Here is the full card-status message order.

1What does "New Card Is Being Produced" mean?

New Card Is Being Produced means USCIS has approved your case and started physically printing your card, whether that is a green card or an Employment Authorization Document. It is one of the most reassuring statuses you can see, because the decision is made and the only thing left is manufacturing and mailing. You do not need to do anything when you see it.

The status applies to any case that results in a physical card. For people who reached this point through an I-485 adjustment of status, it means the green card itself is being printed. For an EAD renewal, it means the work card is on its way. In both cases the hard part, the adjudication, is already behind you.

2How long until the card arrives?

Once you hit "New Card Is Being Produced," the card is typically mailed within a few weeks, and most people receive it shortly after the status moves to "Card Was Mailed." USCIS does not publish a single guaranteed delivery date, so treat this as a general current range and watch the status messages update rather than counting exact days.

The card ships through standard mail, so make sure your address on file is current. If you moved during processing and did not update your address with USCIS, the card can be delayed or returned. Your card carries your A-Number, so if you are not sure what that is, the A-Number guide explains where to find it once the card arrives.

3What is the order of USCIS card status messages?

1

New Card Is Being Produced

The case is approved and USCIS has begun printing the physical card. No action needed from you. This is the first card-specific status after the underlying application is approved.

2

Card Was Mailed to Me

The printed card has left USCIS and is in the mail stream, often with a tracking reference. Delivery usually follows within several days to a couple of weeks depending on mail service.

3

Card Was Picked Up by USPS

The carrier has the card. Many cards ship with Priority Mail Express tracking you can follow on the USPS site. This status confirms the handoff to the postal service.

4

Card Was Delivered to Me

The final status. The card has been delivered to your address on file. If you do not have it in hand when this shows, contact USPS with the tracking number first.

The card-production statuses follow a predictable sequence after approval. Knowing the order tells you exactly how close your card is and whether anything has stalled.

4What if your card never arrives?

If the status reads "Card Was Mailed" or "Delivered" but the card is not in your hands after a reasonable window, the most common culprit is a mail issue. Start with the USPS tracking number if your case has one, then check whether the address on file with USCIS is correct. Cards sent to an old address are a frequent cause of non-delivery.

If tracking shows delivery but you never received it, or the card was returned to USCIS as undeliverable, you generally need to contact USCIS to report non-delivery. Depending on the situation, a card returned as undeliverable can be re-mailed, while a lost-in-transit card may require a replacement filing. Either way, act promptly, because your physical card is what proves your status and work authorization to employers.

Your card proves you can work. If an offer depends on sponsorship, confirm the employer actually files first.

5Does the status mean your case is fully approved?

For practical purposes, yes. "New Card Is Being Produced" only appears after the underlying application is approved, so seeing it means the decision is final and a physical document is on the way. There is no further adjudication step between this status and the card landing in your mailbox.

If you reached this point through an employment-based green card, it is worth remembering how long the road was: PERM, the I-140 petition, then the I-485. If you are still earlier in that journey or weighing an employer, you can review a company's green card sponsorship history against public DOL and USCIS data so you pick a sponsor likely to get you here.

Yes. This status only appears after the underlying application has been approved, so seeing it means the decision is final and a physical card is being printed and mailed. There is no further adjudication between this status and delivery. You do not need to take any action when you see it other than confirming your mailing address with USCIS is correct.

The next statuses are typically "Card Was Mailed to Me," then "Card Was Picked Up by USPS," and finally "Card Was Delivered to Me." Many cards ship with USPS tracking you can follow online. If the status shows the card was mailed or delivered but you do not have it, start with the USPS tracking number and verify the address on file before contacting USCIS.

First check the USPS tracking number if your case has one, then confirm the address on file with USCIS is correct, since cards sent to old addresses are a common cause of non-delivery. If tracking shows delivery but you never got it, or the card was returned as undeliverable, contact USCIS to report non-delivery. A returned card can often be re-mailed, while a lost card may require a replacement filing.

Yes. "New Card Is Being Produced" applies to any USCIS case that results in a physical card, including green cards and Employment Authorization Documents. The meaning is the same in both cases: the application is approved and the card is being printed and prepared for mailing. The card-status message sequence that follows is also the same regardless of which document is being produced.
